He’s sprinting through the dark house. The killer is behind him. And instead of running out the front door, he runs upstairs.
I’m yelling: “NO! What are you doing?!”
But he doesn’t hear me.
He’s stuck in his story.
He can’t see what I see.
We’ve all yelled at the screen before:
“Get off the elevator - she’s waiting for you!” (am I the only one who yells during Serendipity?!")
“Quit the game while you’re ahead.”
“Don’t kiss her… that’s your sister.”
“Run! Run! Don’t go in there!”
Why do we do this? Because we have perspective.
We see what the character can’t.
Here’s the thing:
You’re that character.
I’m that character.
Right now.
And so, we need to wrestle with this question (shout out to Sahil Bloom):
If you were the protagonist in a movie about your life, what would the audience be screaming at you to do right now?
Would they be yelling:
🔥 “Quit.”
🔥 “Double down.”
🔥 “Make the ask.”
🔥 “Let go.”
🔥 “Run.”
The truth is, you are the main character in the movie of your life. And, there are people in your life who see your situation with a unique perspective worth exploring.
You know what’s interesting about the media we consume?
We think we’re watching them, but really? We’re watching ourselves.
We’re drawn to certain characters and stories because we see a piece of us (or a piece we aspire to) somewhere in them. Which means sometimes as we sit back and judge these on-screen characters and yell at them to just “do this thing,” there’s a little piece of us yelling at ourselves.
I’ve been thinking about this question all week and the audience keeps yelling:
“it’s time.”
Two of the scariest words I could be told.
How about you, what’s the audience screaming at you right now?
Are you ready to listen?
If this sparked something, forward it to someone who needs to hear it. They’ll know why.
And if you want more questions like this every week, hit the subscribe. It’s the most impactful email you’ll read all week—all it takes is one question to interrupt your default living just long enough to create a window for a new perspective.
Keep Asking,
Kyle
Love this question! I think I'd be screaming, "Go for it!"
